Ladies First - A Mirage in The World of Patriarchy

“Ladies first.” A phrase so polished, so rehearsed, that it almost sounds like respect. Almost.

But peel back the veneer, and what do you find? A man holding the door, yes, but also holding the power to decide when the door opens. The gesture is generous; the control is absolute.

This is new-age patriarchy. It doesn’t look like oppression. It looks like chivalry. It feels like courtesy. Men take charge of making sure that women feel they are in charge. The illusion is so well-crafted that questioning it feels ungrateful. After all, he let you go first.

But that’s exactly the point, he let you.

The old patriarchy said, “You can’t.” The new one says, “Of course you can, after me.” It simply repackaged control as kindness. The cage got bigger, the bars got decorated, but the lock didn’t change.

True equality doesn’t need a choreographer. It doesn’t need someone to step aside so the other can walk through. It needs both to walk together, without anyone deciding who goes first.

So the next time someone says “ladies first,” ask yourself, who is really leading?
